With works by Ghayath Almadhoun

Poetry Space

“My poems are stolen from those who have been forgotten”: Ghayath Almadhoun writes against turning a blind eye. He puts a name to the carnage that began in Syria with the failure of the revolution, holding a mirror up to Europe for allowing the horrors to happen. With intellectual acuity, irony and black humor, he dissects the rage and mourning over what has been lost. In exile in Sweden, Almadhoun carries forth what he initiated in Damascus: opening up social space for poetry through collaborations with artists.

In Berlin, Almadhoun will transform the daadgalerie for ten days into a temporary location for poetry, where films are screened, Arabic calligraphy is displayed, and performances and talks are held. In his projects with Swedish poet Marie Silkeberg, Almadhoun explores the potential of video poetry and poetic collaboration. Palestinian calligraffiti artist Hamza Abu Ayyash develops written images for Almadhoun’s poems. In conversation with poet and essayist Max Czollek and historian Leyla Dakhli, Almadhoun will talk about writing after catastrophe and the role and relevance of exile in contemporary Arab culture. Almadhoun is a guest of the DAAD Artist-in-Berlin Program in 2019–20.
