With Liza Lim

One and the Other (speculative polskas for Karin) is the title of a composition by Liza Lim (Fellow 2007), created in collaboration with violinist Karin Hellqvist. Hellqvist says: ‘it provides a compositional structure from which I can access the embodied knowledge that developed over years of hosting traditional fiddle music within my body. It acts as a framework within which I can let internalized patterns speak and hybridize in unexpected ways.’

In this workshop, Lim & Hellqvist will discuss aspects of their collaborative process and teach the audience some easy steps of a Swedish folk dance. A shared experience of how prosaic movement becomes dance then provides a basis for discussing musical sketches and for unpacking some aspects of notation. Themes and questions will revolve around embodied practice, the tactility of time, ornamentation as desire and lure, memory, repetition and ritual.

Swedish violinist Karin Hellqvist is a soloist and chamber musician with profound engagement in contemporary and experimental music. She is a member of several forefront ensembles for new music in Scandinavia, as Cikada, Oslo Sinfonietta and Duo Hellqvist/Amaral. She works closely with a number of composers and artists, and her debut album Flock (2019) was awarded with the Preis der Deutschen Shallplattenkritik 2020, featuring examples of her collaborative work. Hellqvist is educated in Stockholm, Berlin, Oslo and London and is currently a PhD fellow in artistic research at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where she researches the potential of collaboration in new music creation. She is awarded the Interpreter’s Prize as well as Honorary Membership of the Swedish Society for Composers.
