With Alan Pauls, Juanjo Pereira
Artist talk with Paraguayan filmmaker Juanjo Pereira (Film Fellow 2026), followed by a conversation with Argentinian writer Alan Pauls (Literature Fellow 2019)
This artist talk explores the relationship between the history of Paraguayan cinema and the country’s political past. From the photographic record of the War of the Triple Alliance to filmed images of the Chaco War and the propaganda newsreels produced during the Stroessner dictatorship, audiovisual material in Paraguay has often been shaped by state power and militarised narratives.
Because independent film production and archival institutions developed relatively late, much of Paraguay’s visual history survives in the form of official footage, foreign productions, and fragmented archives. The talk examines how these materials can be critically reinterpreted through creative documentary practices.
Through historical analysis and practical reflection, participants are invited to rethink archives not as static records, but as living materials capable of generating new meanings and critical cinematic narratives.
