DOUBLE CONCERT: DROR FEILER + MATS LINDSTROM / JAVIER AREAL VÉLEZ

As Dror Feiler’s fellowship is coming to an end, the year for Javier Areal Vélez in Berlin is just beginning. Not only do both fellows meet on stage for the first time in this double concert evening at the daadgalerie, but two generations of noise and improvised live electronics come together: Dror Feiler performs a duo with his long-time collaborator Mats Lindström, studio director of the legendary Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm, while Javier Areal Velez presents semiautomático, a duo between a digital entity and himself.

Lindström and Feiler have been working together since the late 1980-ies. In most cases with larger constellations but on some rare and exclusive occasions as duo. The concert they will present is dedicated to their close friend, band mate and experimental guitar hero Sören Runolf who passed away recently.

Mats Lindström works as a composer and a musician, often with strains of live-electronics. He often works with intermedia, scenic elements and visual arts as a complement to the music, and he has worked both with music for theatre, radio and dance.  Since 2004 he is the artistic director of the electronic music studio EMS.

Dror Feiler—musician, composer, visual artist, and political activist—has spent his life refusing to compromise. He has never seen art as entertainment. Indeed, his music itself is an act of confrontation. His entire body of work aims to destabilize the audience, to make them engage with sound, dig deep into it, experience all of its electric physicality, and bring their own unique experiences to the process.

After a long trajectory as a cultural manager (Javier Areal-Velez founded the experimental music series RUIDO, which he still directs, and also coordinated the Sound Art Center – CASo), and as a musician who focuses on unconventional uses of the electric guitar, his recent artistic work cedes structural control to autonomous robots. The human being becomes part of a bio-mechanical assemblage—not as an expressive agent, but as one negotiator among many forces. Programming the automaton does not grant him control over its decisions; what remains is the possibility to interrupt, accelerate, or halt ongoing processes.
