With Affonso Uchoa

Born in São Paulo in 1984, Affonso Uchôa has, in the words of film scholar Fabio Andrade, produced films that “refresh the political vocation of Latin American cinema, pushing it toward a radical self-reflection that does not refuse narration, but instead pulls it from the frail fabric of daily life.” On July 21, Kino Arsenal is presenting a double bill by Uchôa, currently in Berlin as a 2020 film fellow. In A Vizinhança do Tigre (The Hidden Tiger, Brazil 2014), he creates an unprejudiced, carefully composed portrait of young people from a poor district of the city of Contagem. For this program at Kino Arsenal, he places historical films alongside his feature debut which are also dedicated to the marginalized: O Tigre e a Gazela (Brazil 1976) and Teremos Infância (Brazil 1971), two documentary shorts by Aloysio Raulino, and Víctor Gaviria’s Rodrigo D: No Futuro (Colombia 1990), whose protagonist dreams of playing drums in a punk band, even as the drug trade and violence rule outside in the streets of Medellín.
