With Shireen Seno

On October 13, filmmaker Shireen Seno (fellow 2022) will present her second feature film at Kino Arsenal: Nervous Translation takes on the perspective of a child who lives in her own world. Shy eight-year-old Yael is often alone. She cooks in a dolls’ house kitchen, is fascinated by a magic pen and secretly listens to cassettes of recordings of the voice of her father, who has emigrated to Saudi Arabia. Among the jump cuts and the 80s soundtrack, a visit from her globalized family, TV news reports after the end of the Marcos dictatorship and a typhoon bear witness to the outside world. Seno’s focus on the family is often a means to address the violence and pain underpinning domestic life as much as the legacies of colonialism and domineering patriarchal figures who continue to populate the political landscape of the Philippines.

Shireen Seno pairs her film with the poetic Lukas nino by John Torres. During a film shoot, a teenager named Lukas is confronted with the disappearance of his father, who is apparently half-man, half-horse. When he notices changes in his body, he begins to ask himself if he too is half-animal.
