Poet Karima Shabrang has written five volumes of poetry, which have been awarded various literary prizes. The Afghan Voice Agency, the first media agency founded after the fall of the former Taliban regime, published a documentary film about poetry made by Karima Shabrang in 2019. Shabrang, who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Persian Language and Literature from Kabul University, has worked as a teacher of Persian literature, a teacher trainer for a non-governmental organization and a gender consultant for various organizations in Kabul. She was persecuted for her open treatment of eroticism and female desire in her poems and has been living in exile in Berlin since November 2022. Her residency at the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program was funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion as part of the partnership with ICORN (International Cities of Refuge Network).

    Due to the open treatment of eroticism and female desire in her poems, the poet Karima Shabrang was persecuted in Afghanistan and has been living in exile in Berlin since November 2022. Some of the poems written during her stay in protection under the ICORN program appear in this publication in German translation by Ali Abdollahi and Sarah Rauchfuß.

    This publication and the ICORN scholarships were funded by the State of Berlin as part of the “Weltoffenes Berlin” program of the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.
