doors 4:30 pm, start 5 pm

On the occasion of the single-CD release the audiovisual project My Friend’s Job – whichAlicja Rogalska (fellow 2020/21) conceived in collaboration with Komunitas Pengamen Jalanan (The Street Musicians Union in Jakarta, Indonesia) – the artist will speak with media activist, Diana McCarty, about the universality of protest songs and music as social and political commentary.

Additionally, Rogalska will screen two video works: News Medley (2020) and Broniów Song (2011), which combine traditional local melodies with contemporary lyrics. Together with the Women’s Choir of Kartal (Hungary), villagers, and the folk singing group, Broniowianki, of the rural area of Southern Masovia (Poland), the songs were collectively re-written, bringing together personal stories with shared concerns about community life and the pressing issues and emotions of the current moment.

The CD of My Friend’s Job can be purchased for a donation, which will directly benefit street musicians in Jakarta.

Slot 2: Anocha Suwichakornpong in conversation with Maria Mohr

screening / talk (in English)

6 pm

The interdisciplinary series Sampled Ground comes to an end with the screening of Krabi, 2562, Ben Rivers´ and Anocha Suwichakornpong´s first collaboration. In their individual practice, both filmmakers produce complex collage-like stories that shapeshift between generic categories, sharing an interest in myth, historical memory and marginalized communities. In their collaborative feature, premiered in Locarno in 2019, Rivers and Suwichakornpong explore the outskirts of Krabi, in south Thailand, a place often depicted in Hollywood films. Combining surreal humor and social satire, mixing fact and fiction, their film interrogates notions of identity and cultural tourism.
