Born 1976 in Odder, Denmark, he studied composition with Karl Aage Rasmussen in Aarhus (1998–2003; with Mathias Spahlinger in Freiburg 2001/02; with Gabriel Valverde in Buenos Aires 2003/04; and with Bent Sørensen and Hans Abrahamsen in Copenhagen (2004–2006).

He has received numerous grants and awards from, among others, the Danish Art Foundation, the Léonie Sonning Music Foundation, and the International Summer Courses for New Music Darmstadt (Kranichsteiner Prize 2008); diverse residencies. His works have been commissioned by groups including ensemble recherche / Donaueschinger Musiktage 2007, Ensemble Modern, Radio Kammerphilharmonie Hilversum and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra; and have been performed by ensembles such as ICTUS, Collegium Novum Zürich and the Silesian String Quartet.
Since 2008 he has taught composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. He has published articles in kunstMUSIK, Dansk Musik Tidsskrift, Parergon (Norway) and is the co-editor of AUTOGRAF.org, the Danish magazine for the newest art music.

In addition to compositions for soloists, ensembles and orchestra, some of which are scored for additional unorthodox instruments, devices and electroacoustic setups, Simon Steen-Andersen’s extremely heterogeneous oeuvre also encompasses audiovisual installations. His music often extends into the theatrical dimension through the performers’ actions. Ensemble Mosaik performs works by Simon Steen-Andersen in Berlin as part of the concert series “unerhörte musik” (BKA, June 2009), and “open_sources 09” (Kulturbrauerei, Kesselhaus, December 2009).

During his stay as guest of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin program, Simon Steen-Andersen will work on a commission for the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2010; a new music theater project with CapriConnection, an independent theater group from Basel; and Buenos Aires, a chamber opera for the Norwegian Ultima Festival, autumn 2010; as well as on various performance and installation projects.
