Ukraine, Ukraine Encounters, 2023

Dariia
Chechushkova

Dariia (Dasha) Chechushkova (lives in Odesa and Lviv, Ukraine) graduated from the Mitrofan Grekov School of Art in Odesa (2014–18) and studied art theory at the National Academy of Arts in Kyiv (2018–23), after initially focusing on graphic drawings in her first year. She was forced to move to Lviv after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Employing a variety of media, including photography, video, drawing, painting, poetry, embroidery, and happenings, she is concerned in her practice with the transformation of ideas and concepts into new forms and seeks to create “total installation”-like spaces inspired by her diary-sketchbooks of drawings about modern folklore. Of central interest are the ways in which individuals interact with their environments and how this “harmony” changes depending on circumstances. Current focuses include memory, monuments, imitation(mimesis), and “honoring tradition.”

Dariia Chechushkova will be staying in Berlin in August/September 2023 with a fellowship from the DAAD Encounters with Ukrainian Artists Program and will participate in the screening and conversation Talking about Myself? Talking about You” curated by Mykola Ridnyi.
