Sampled Ground

Interdisciplinary Event Series with fellows from all fields at daadgalerie, Sep 30th – Oct 10th, 2021

How much context does understanding require? What levels of meaning do set pieces of sounds, images, forms, or words contain, no matter how granular, abstract, and unrecognizable they might be? Which nuances oscillate in the friction between ornament, variation, and repetition, or between individuality and collective? Current and former fellows from various Artists-in-Berlin Program disciplines will explore these and other questions in a ten-day series of events.

In contrast to the cool, minimalist aesthetics often associated with algorithms, pattern recognition, and cybernetic repetition-mechanisms, artistic practices are presented here that address the organic as well as segregating and uncontrollable aspects of sampling and pattern sequencing. Here questions concerning lines of connection between spaces or materials from which set pieces are drawn and into which they are conveyed will be examined in a less technical and more metaphorical way. Interpretative control and reinterpretation strategies in working with samples as a popular cultural technique reflect current transdisciplinary debates on belonging and access and thus explore in various ways not least the common ground between all participants, i.e. both artists and audience.
