Miklós Mészöly (1921–2001) is considered the “father of contemporary Hungarian literature,” which achieved world renown with authors such as Péter Nádas, Péter Esterházy, Imre Kertész, and László Krasznahorkai. In 1974, Mészöly came to Berlin at the invitation of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. He became the forerunner of a literary movement that, under the aegis of the artists’ program, paved the way for an entire generation of young Hungarians—today some of the biggest names from Central Europe—into the German literary scene. Mészöly’s most important book, the novel Rückblenden, was also written in Berlin. The international l iterature festival berlin is dedicating an evening to Mészöly in honor of his 100th birthday. Péter Nádas, for whom Mészöly was a teacher and friend, speaks about the author’s life’s work, moderated by Gregor Dotzauer.
