With Burak Çevik

Alan (Turkish noun): In cities, an open, flat and wide place, near historical monuments, where gatherings can be held. Alan is also the name of a new series of gatherings and encounters initiated and organized by filmmaker Burak Çevik (film fellow 2022) and artist Dilşad Aladağ. For the second edition, they invited filmmaker Helena Wittmann to present her debut film Drift (2017). In Wittmann’s words, Drift is “about states of being, places, emotions and movements.” Two women spend a weekend together by the sea. After parting ways and now separated by the vastness of the Atlantic, they begin a journey back together. In the sublimity of the ocean, when some things are beyond the possibility of understanding and learning, the film explores how confrontation with the unknowable can be quite reassuring. The screening will be accompanied by a sound performance by Nika Son who composed the film’s soundtrack, and a reading performance by Theresa George.
