With Zuleikha Chaudhari

In her lecture at the daadgalerie, Indian artist Zuleikha Chaudhari will talk about two of her current projects: “Rehearsing the Witness: The Bhawal Court Case” and “Landscape as Evidence: Artist as Witness”.
Since 2011, Chaudhari has been working with the archive and the relationship between history and theatre through re-enactment – the re-constructing and re-staging of archival material. Her current research investigates the connections between law and performance as two ways of producing reality and truth.
In this sense, history, law and theatre are different narrative strategies, which hold in common the tension between the act of speculation/imagination and truth finding and truth making.

She will be in conversation with Kris Merken, (dramaturg on Rehearsing the Witness: The Bhawal Court Case) on the process of translating specific historical material for a larger context. Is it possible to speak of experiences and histories that are not ones own?

Zuleikha Chaudhari was invited in 2019 with a short-term grant from the Berliner Künstlerprogramm.

Zuleikha Chaudhari (born 1973 in Mumbai, India) is an interdisciplinary artist, theatre director and lightning designer based in Delhi. Her work has been shown at numerous international festivals and exhibitions, such as the International Theatre Festival Kerala (2019), Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (2018), Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2016, 2017), Wiener Festwochen (2012) and Seoul Performing Arts Festival (2007), among others.
She is currently the director of the Alkazi Theatre Archives at The Alkazi Foundation for the Arts, New Delhi.
