Festival experimenteller Musik und Sound Art
Contours and borders dissolve in the micro-cosmos and new levels of sound become audible. The festival mikromusik, organized by the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program (BKP), presents musical practices in the micro-realm and plays with the multiple meanings of the term 'micro'. Compositional explorations of micro-zones, micro-resonances and microtonality generate a nuanced image of sound and draw attention to the in-between. Moreover, the microphone, as a central instrument in electronic and sound art, reflects (sonic) reality and acts as a magnifying glass and starting point for transformation. A variety of performance modes will be presented in concerts and installations that focus on the phenomenology of the micro-cosmos as well as its cultural significance.

The festival centers on intercultural dialogue and features current and former international guests of the BKP, founded in 1963. The New York electronic musicians Zeena Parkins and Ikue Mori play as the duo Phantom Orchard for the first time in Berlin, and Ankersmit/Tricoli sound out the resonances of the former USA monitoring installation on Teufelsberg. Konrad Korabiewski, Emeka Ogboh, Auinger/Strobl and Dafeldecker/Gaal create new site-specific installations from Lagos to Storkwinkel. Osvaldo Budón creates a soundspace from 55 guitars tuned microtonally and played live. A concert by the Ensemble Mosaik unfurls culturally wrought microtonal compositions by Grisey, Pelzel, Lim, Lang and Poppe. A special concert is dedicated to the composer Vinko Globokar, who celebrates his 80th birthday in 2014 and who was a guest of the BKP 50 years ago, in 1964. The concert features his staged live-electronic composition Introspection d’un tubiste. A workshop queries issues of cultural identity in sound art as well as different concepts of sound and sound recording.
