»El Año Del Tigre«
Sebastián Lelio‘s films are intimate plays characterized by great emotional intensity rather than external action. The storyline is limited to a few characters whose world, which is restricted in terms of time and location, becomes unhinged – this is intensified by use of turbulent hand camera shots, dynamic montage and improvisation. Lelio’s award-winning feature film »La Sagrada Familia« (Chile 2006 / 24.9.) depicts how the façade of a wealthy `picture-book´ family collapses: A visit from the son’s girlfriend during Easter brings supressed feelings to the suface. In »El año del tigre« (Chile 2011 / 27.9.) lurking violence prevails below the surface. An escaped prisoner who fled an earthquake and tsunami wanders through (very real) destroyed villages and landscapes. When he encounters a caged tiger, he frees it. But what can the two do with their freedom in this apocolyptic scenario?
