The title refers to the history of BEAST (Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre), one of the leading international systems for the presentation of electroacoustic music. Relatively unique as a large-scale touring loudspeaker orchestra, BEAST is now capable of mounting systems with in excess of 100 discrete channels, and has been an innovator and leader in the field for more than 25 years. This comprehensive sound diffusion system for the performance of electroacoustic music is to perform in Schinkel’s St. Elisabeth church in central Berlin and will captivate the concert audience with its acusmatic music, which was invented by François Bayle in 1974 and has become a “Inventionen” tradition in the meantime: The 1983 “Inventionen” saw Bayle perform with his GRM Acousmonium (GRM = Groupe de Recherche Musicale) in Germany for the first time. Further invitations followed in 1988, 1994, 1998 and in 2008. However other loudspeaker orchestras have also performed at “Inventionen:” the first BEAST system in the year 2000 in the Parochialkirche, 2002 the system of the "Musiques et Recherches” Belgium and an entirety of Acusmoniums, sound domes and WFS arrays for “Inventionen” 2008 in the WellenFeld of the TU Berlin. For this year we await the new and much bigger BEAST system. The audience will sit in the middle of the room in the St. Elisabeth church and will be surrounded by countless loudspeakers which make grand music come alive. The actual invisible sound world becomes a “film for one’s ears”, which is projected live from the mixing control desk onto the church space. Thus each acusmatic work experiences its own individual performance.

The BEAST Acusmonium is set up and operated by staff of the University of Birmingham and led by Jonty Harrison who taught at the TU Berlin in the summer semester 2010 as an Edgard-Varèse guest professor of the DAAD. Together with the “Inventionen” festival 2010 Harrison has created a historical and contemporary program. About half of the 40 acusmatic works will premiere in Berlin, including a new piece by Harrison himself with the title BEASTory. 13 scholarship holders of the Artists-in-Berlin Program of the DAAD or DAAD guest professors respectively are almost exclusively represented with premieres and demonstrate the actuality and fascination with this music being performed at one of Berlin’s most beautiful places.
