Turgut Erçetin: Panopticon Specularities (2016–17, UA)
for four simultaneous ensembles with different tempi

Works presented at the opening concert raise fundamental questions concerning the nature of composition today, the relationship between individuals and groups, musical expression in a weary and deflated world, and the essence of the musical context. Featuring a premiere by Turgut Erçetin (2016 ABP guest), two works by new guest Yair Klartag from Israel, and Clangs, an ensemble composition by Clara Iannotta (2013 ABP guest). Erçetin’s Panopticon Specularities is part of an Ensemblekollektiv Berlin commission for four composers that expands on an existing, small-ensemble composition (Deng), adapting it specifically for Ensemblekollektiv. In his two ensemble works, Klartag questions meaning, expression, and normality as legitimate categories of music aesthetics. In Iannotta’s Clangs, layered rhythmic bells create a texture of figures and gestures.
