International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN)

With ICORN, a new fellowship for at-risk cultural workers established in 2018, the Artists-in-Berlin Program sets a mark for freedom of the arts and expression. The fellowship is funded by the state of Berlin, which joined the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) in May 2018. Thanks to the Norway-based organization, around 200 at-risk and threatened artists and writers have found temporary refuge in over sixty cities worldwide. As a partner institution of the State of Berlin, the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program oversees and provides administrative support to fellowship holders.

The first guest, Iraqi poet and Arab studies scholar Nada Al-Khawwam, arrived in December 2018 to pursue her literary work in Berlin. In addition to presenting a reading for UNESCO World Poetry Day at the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor and lectures at the Institute for Semitic and Arabic Studies at the Free University of Berlin, she participated in the ICORN General Assembly in Rotterdam. Translations of her poems are published in German and English.
